Drake Busath, Instructor
Master of Photography, Cr.
According to Drake, he “grew up in a darkroom” as a second generation pro photographer, who has built a reputation and style all his own. Drake owns Busath Studio & Gardens, located in an historic mansion in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. With 12 artists and master printers on staff, the studio is renowned for its authentic family and children’s portraiture.
Drake’s photography has been the subject of numerous articles in photographic journals; he has been featured four times on the cover of Professional Photographer magazine; and he has been a regular platform speaker at Imaging USA. Drake enjoys sharing his expertise and has taught seminars to photographers across the United States as well as in Australia, Japan, Korea, and Canada. His images beautify homes and institutions the world over.
In 1999, Drake founded Italy Workshops, a series of photographic village tours and hands-on workshops. Drake has lived in or visited Italy frequently for decades. He is not only fluent in Italian, but he possesses a deep knowledge – and affection – for the country, its beauty, culture and lifestyle, making him uniquely qualified to lead these photographic workshops. Hundreds of photographers have joined Drake on what he describes as a “personal Renaissance” in Tuscany, Umbria, the Italian Riviera, Venice, the Lakes District, the Italian Alps, the Dolomites, the Puglia region and the Amalfi Coast. Recently Italy Workshops expanded its adventures to include trips to France. View Drake’s images.
Joel Addams, Instructor and Trekking Guide
Joel is inspired by great light and meaningful travel, which is evident throughout his outdoor and travel photography. His versatility as an artist can be seen in his rich color landscapes and through his use of subtle black and white tones. Even with his sports imagery and commercial work, Joel’s artistic eye creates balanced compositions typically found in gallery work. He focuses on aesthetics over subject, selecting content that matches his vision to preserve the landscape; the power of the individual in outdoor sports; and the poetry found in minimalist black and white scenes.
Joel has taught film photography and digital imagery throughout Utah and in Paris, France. In 2011, he designed and taught, “Photography as Communication, Art, and Catalyst”, an Honors course at the University of Utah. In 2015, Joel was featured on the cover of National Geographicmagazine with an image from Zion Narrows. Other credits include National Geographic Online Edition, Merian Magazine (Germany), The Travel Channel, Utah Department of Tourism, Continuum Magazine (University of Utah), as well as editorial and advertising campaigns around the world. His fine art prints are found in over 150 collections around the country and in Europe. See Joel’s website.

You’ll appreciate her constant attention to your personal needs and you’ll notice her always-cheerful greetings and smile. Kari has been an important part of our workshop organization since 2012.
Jamie’s is the voice you’ll hear when you call with questions. One of the most experienced Photoshop artists in America, Jamie doubles as administrative assistant for the workshops. Ray Ownbey, Producer for Italy
PhD American Literature, Dean of English Department, Westminster College, Retired
Ray has guided dozens of groups throughout England and Europe for Westminster College Alumni Association. Upon his retirement, he attended an Italy Workshops event to improve his photography. He attended a few times as participant before we adopted him, to act both as a guide in historic literary sites, and to teach us journaling skills during the week. Your trip will be enriched, listening to his stories, journal entries, and his tips on writing your own trip journal.
Marie Heiss, Producer-France
Marie grew up in Angers, in the Loire Valley area of central France, with its fine blue slate, its uniquely soft light and the wild river that were praised in Joachim Du Bellay’s poetry. Like him, she was so attracted to the Loire River and its remarkable light that she would not dream of living away. As a nurse, she worked in various hospitals and clinics that were always located in the heart of the Loire Valley. Marie drove and walked all over the area, organizing youth camps or field trips, discovering amazing old churches, dolmens and small castle-like houses. She is very enthusiastic about sharing “her Loire River Valley” with photographers gifted with an artistic eye.
Painter Rod Heiss was clever enough to marry Marie about 5 years ago. He has been a huge help on our France workshops, driving, keeping us all in line and in stitches with his stories. Rod is an accomplished and prolific artist, and we’re indebted to him for the depth he brings to our art discussions. See Rod’s paintings
